I am finally heading on vacation for a couple of weeks, with Venice as my destination.

I will be exploring the beauty of the area, visiting watch shops, and keeping count of how many times I come across my last name, since part of my family originates from this region and areas farther east.

Here is a little bit about Venice and its history through horology:

Venice’s history with timekeeping is anchored by the 1499 St. Mark's Clock Tower (Torre dell'Orologio), a masterpiece marking the city's time for over 500 years. While Switzerland dominated production, modern Venetian horology has seen a revival, led by brands like Venezianico (formerly Meccaniche Veneziane) and 421 Venice, which blend artisanal design with the city's cultural heritage.

Key Historical & Modern Watchmaking in Venice:

  • Torre dell'Orologio (1499): The iconic Clock Tower in Piazza San Marco, designed by Gian Paolo Rainieri and Bartolomeo Ferracina, represents the historical pinnacle of Venetian timekeeping, featuring an astronomical clock indicating zodiac signs, sun positions, and moon phases.

  • Modern Revival (2017-Present): Young, local designers have revived the industry. Alberto and Alessandro Morelli founded Venezianico in 2017 (originally Meccaniche Veneziane), utilizing Kickstarter to gain popularity.

  • Cultural Inspiration: Modern Venetian watches often pay tribute to local history, such as the Venezianico Nereide inspired by the city's naval, artistic, and architectural elements like the Horses of St Mark.

  • 421 Venice: A brand founded by Claudio Dalla Mora and Dario Ceolotto, referencing the legendary founding date of Venice (March 25, 421 A.D.).

  • RISIWatchMaker: Artisan watchmaker Mr. Risi developed the "VENETHIA" watch, a tribute to the 16th-century era of the city, reproducing the detailed St Mark's clock on a wristwatch.

Key Historical Themes:

  • Symbolism of Time: The golden Renaissance cross on the St. Mark's Tower inspired modern designers to focus on harmony and history, rather than just technical precision.

  • Byzantine Influence: Modern watches, such as the Venezianico Arsenale Bizantino, also reference the strong, historic connection between Venice and Constantinople, highlighting intricate engraved patterns.
